Bridgestone Malaysia Joins Relay For Life To Raise Cancer Awareness

Kuala Lumpur, 9th September 2017 – For the third year running, Bridgestone Malaysia has given its support to the National Cancer Society Malaysia’s marquee event, Relay For Life Kuala Lumpur 2017. Relay For Life is a franchised event from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to promote cancer awareness, which runs in over 20 countries across the globe. Cancer survivors, their caregivers and the general public took turns to walk the track for 16 hours from 6pm on Saturday (9th Sep 2017) to 10am on Sunday in support of cancer awareness, and to pay tribute to those who have lost the battle against the disease.

Mr. Jo Takekawa, Managing Director of Bridgestone Malaysia has commented that, “For over 80 years, Bridgestone has been dedicated in helping customers to keep moving on their journeys with passion and innovation that delivers reliability, safety and performance. Relay for Life is a meaningful 16-hour event where the field is not left unattended for the whole duration to show support to cancer patients, cancer survivors, their caregivers and family members. And like our products, we aspire to keep moving to overcome any obstacle. We are happy to see so many people came to this event to show their support despite the heavy rain.”

As the principle sponsor for “2017 Relay For Life Kuala Lumpur”, Bridgestone Malaysia also donated RM 78,837.50 to the National Cancer Society Malaysia. Proceeds from the sponsorship and funds raised from this event are channeled directly to National Cancer Society Malaysia to be used for community outreach programmes, therapy and wellness programmes for cancer patients and survivors, cancer and health screening services and free accommodation for underprivileged children going through cancer treatment.

About National Cancer Society Malaysia & Relay For Life

The National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) is a registered, tax exempt charity body established in 1966, under the laws of the Malaysian Societies Act and Registrar of Societies Malaysia, and is the first cancer related NGO in the country that provides education, care and support services for people affected by cancer. NCSM was founded by Dato’ Dr S.K. Dharmalingam and launched by the YAB Tun Abdul Razak. It is now under the distinguished patronage of the Sultan of Perak. The Society is financed entirely by voluntary contributions from the public.

Relay for Life (RFL) is a worldwide movement that aims to spread the key messages about cancer as well as raise much needed funds for cancer services. It started in USA, under the American Cancer Society. RFL is a franchised event from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and runs in over 20 countries.

In Malaysia, RFL is organised by NCSM in 3 states i.e. Penang, Kuala Lumpur & Melaka, started in 2005 at Penang, 2007 at Kuala Lumpur & 2011 at Melaka. RFL is basically National Cancer Society Malaysia’s (NCSM) biggest annual cancer awareness and fundraising event which also celebrates cancer survivorship. It is a 16-hour event to symbolise the cancer journey from sun-up to sundown. Every relay event has a track which cannot be left unattended for 16 hours straight. RFL is also made up of stage performances, F&B stalls, in-field games, activities and sponsors booths.
